Four matches to be played each day during group stage of World Cup 2022 in Qatar

Four matches rather than three will be played each day during the group stage of World Cup 2022 in Qatar, FIFA has announced.

Stephen Kenny has been tasked with leading the Republic of Ireland to the finals which will be staged from November 21 to December 18.

And the Boys in Green will start their qualifiers in March 2021 with the qualifying draw itself due to take place in November this year.

At World Cup 2022, kick-off times for the first two rounds of matches will be 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm local time.

All of the grounds in Qatar will be within a 40-mile radius so teams, supporters and media won’t have too much travel to factor in.

Kick-off times in the final round of group games and knock-out round matches will be at 6pm and 10pm local time.

FIFA also confirmed that the opening match will be played at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor on Monday, November 21 with Qatar one of the teams in action.

The 2022 final venue is the Lusail Stadium in Doha on Sunday, December 18.
