Four lockdown rules that if broken police will now treat as a crime

Earlier this week, Boris Johnson announced changes to lockdown measures that would apply from July 4.

Setting out its plan to return life to as near to normal, social distancing is being reduced and support bubbles are expanding.

Pubs, restaurants and bars are also reopening under strict measures.

But until then, the Government is reminding Brits that there a number of rules still in place - and if broken, you could be prosecuted.

What is a criminal offence?

It is a criminal offence to:

  • meet indoors with anyone who is not a member of your household or, from 13 June, your support bubble, except for specific exceptions set out in law
  • meet outdoors in a group of more than six with people who are not in your household or support bubble, except for specific exceptions set out in law
  • incite others to break the rules by e.g. inviting people to a party
  • threaten others with infection by coronavirus, for example by coughing or spitting in their direction

While the infection rate continues to fall, Mr Johnson has been clear that the public must continue to follow social distancing guidelines to keep coronavirus under control.

The Government will keep all measures under constant review and says they will not hesitate to apply the handbrake, or reverse measures, should the virus begin to run out of control.
