A plan by four Leeds men to sneak into the Lake District using a 'secret' taxi at 1am was foiled by police this morning (Sunday).
While the tale may have seemed like the start of a joke, the group weren't laughing when they were escorted by officers back to the Lancashire border.
During the coronavirus lockdown people have been told to stay home and only leave the house for essential things like food and medicine. Clearly a trip to a National Park - closed by the authorities - was no such trip.
Why the four Yorkshiremen tried to cross the border from Lancashire into Cumbria in the middle of the night is unclear.
But Cumbria police believe the group were trying to sneak in under the cover of darkness.
The taxi and occupants were turned around and escorted away.
A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "Four men in a taxi from Leeds come to the Lake District at 1.30am in the morning! Sadly it's not the beginning of a joke and they were not laughing when we escorted them back to the Lancashire border.
"We are out at all hours so don't try sneaking in. Stay at home means just that."
