Nine killed in second Turkish school shooting in two days

  • A student opened fire at a middle school in Kahramanmaras, southeast Turkey, killing nine people and wounding 20 others.
  • The victims included a teacher and many students, with at least four of the injured reported to be in serious condition.
  • The assailant, identified as Isa Aras Mersinli, was also killed and was reportedly armed with five firearms and seven magazines believed to belong to his father, a retired police officer, who has since been detained.
  • The motive for the attack remains unknown, and Turkish authorities have imposed a ban on broadcasting "traumatic" images from the incident.
  • This shooting marks the second such incident in Turkey within two days, following an attack in Sanliurfa province where 16 people were wounded, an occurrence previously rare in the country.
