Four women from Korea, who had only been in the country for a few weeks, were killed when their car crashed into a semi-trailer on a Queensland highway.
Three paramedic crews and a helicopter were called to the scene at The Summit, between Warwick and Stanthorpe, at 5:30pm on Wednesday.
Initial investigations showed the driver of the car was attempting to enter the highway and head south when it collided with the truck.
Authorities said the car was dragged about 150 metres down the highway, with the four occupants dying at the scene.
"It would appear at this stage that they have sadly failed to give way," Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon said.
"They were hit side on and tragically lost their lives at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics to save the life of at least one person."
The women in their 20s were backpackers working and living on a local farm in the area, Assistant Commissioner Condon said.
Queensland Ambulance Service superintendent Steve Jones said the truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and emotional shock, but was in a stable condition.
Superintendent Jones said the scene was "quite confronting" for first responders.
"Our condolences are obviously with the family involved, and the friends and also those of the truck driver as well," he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage, to come forward.
