Four people died after a cyclonic storm struck the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

More than 185 houses were damaged and widespread power outages reported following heavy rain and strong winds.

The storm uprooted 400 trees in the state capital Chennai, a hub for auto makers and technology firms.

Around 25,000 people, including disaster relief personnel, were involved in the relief work. More than 9,000 people were moved to safety in 201 relief camps, local minister MK Stalin said.

“We are still assessing damages,” he told reporters while visiting some of the affected areas.

The storm – named Mandous – forced schools to close in Sri Lanka as it swept past the nation on Friday.

More than ten flights were cancelled at Chennai Airport on Friday due to the adverse weather conditions.

It is expected to gradually weaken into a low-pressure area, India’s meteorological department tweeted on Saturday.
