Four kids die as bodies found on riverbank and man missing in horror fishing accident

Four children have died and a man remains missing after they were swept away by the tide in a fishing accident.

The trip ended in tragedy when four children, all under the age of 10, died in a village in northeastern Quebec, Canada police said.

Authorities are still searching for a missing man in his 30s, who was a member of the fishing party, and remains unaccounted for.

The bodies of the four kids were found unresponsive on the river bank a few hours after authorities received an emergency call about a group that had been swept up by the tide near Portneuf-sur-Mer.

They were among a group of 11 people who were fishing for capelin on foot near the shore when they were caught off guard by the rising tide.

Six other people were rescued alive from the water.

Mayor Jean-Maurice Tremblay said: "Everyone is affected by what happened, because this kind of event, it's the first time it's happened. When it involves five people, and four children drowning during a recreational activity, it's certain people are quite sad about it."

Tremblay said fishing for capelin is a popular activity done on the banks of the river using scoops rather than fishing lines.

He added the children were caught on a part of the peninsula where parts can be submerged by up to four metres of water when the tide rises.

Police investigators and forensic teams have launched an investigation.
