Four key questions answered about Man City vs Chelsea Champions League final venue

Manchester City fans still don't have an answer on where the Champions League final will be staged.

Scheduled to be played on May 29, the Blues' clash against Chelsea later this month was originally set to be played in Turkey, but the UK government has since placed the country on a travel ban list as their COVID-19 cases continue to surge.

Considering it's an all-England final, it would seem logical to host the game at Wembley, but fresh details emerged today suggesting the final could be moved elsewhere. So, where will the game be played and who will make the decision?

We've answered all the important questions below.

Q) What are the options on the Champions League final venue?

A) Now Turkey are on the UK 'red list', UEFA are likely to move the final from Istanbul, although it's not yet clear as to where.

As mentioned, Wembley has naturally become a front-running candidate to host the final, but the UK government has strict rules on who enters the country, which could cause problems given the stakeholders who would expect to attend.

With such doubts remaining, reports today suggested UEFA are considering moving the final to Lisbon in Portugal instead, with talks between the UK goverment and Europe's football governing body making no progress.

Travel restrictions into Portugal aren't as strict as they are in the UK, and that is why the country has emerged as a serious contender to host the final.

Q) What are the implications for supporters?

A) City have made it to their first Champions League final yet they don't know where the game will be played, and with the fixture set to be played in just a few weeks' time, UEFA's decision will have huge ramifications on supporters' travel arrangements.

Considering the uncertainty, fans have been left in an uncomfortable position and UEFA need to make a decision as soon as possible because supporters deserve clarity, especially those who are deciding whether travel to the final to support City on May 29.

UEFA had initially hoped to give both City and Chelsea a minimum of 4,000 tickets each for the game in Turkey.

Q) When will the decision on the venue be made?

A) Fortunately for supporters, they'll soon have an answer on where the final will be played. UEFA has announced the deadline for their decision on the venue on Wednesday 12 May, which is just over two weeks before the game is scheduled.

Q) Who will make the decision?

A) The decision will be taken by UEFA, but they're liaising with respective governments and this will influence the outcome.
