Four in, four out - Newcastle fans have their say on who should go and who should stay this summer

It seems fans are calling for time on the Newcastle careers of Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll, Yoshinori Muto and Karl Darlow.

A sample of almost 2,000 supporters voted for the foursome to be sold this summer in a special transfer window survey we ran on ChronicleLive.

In terms of who should stay, Matt Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, Florian Lejeune and Freddie Woodman all received votes of confidence from fans, with more than half of supporters polled calling for each to remain at the club this summer rather than be loaned out or sold.

Loans were deemed the best options for Matty Longstaff and Elliot Anderson by fans taking part in the poll.

Fans were most keen for Matt Ritchie to stay, 67% voted for that scenario, while Florian Lejeune's popularity on Tyneside was confirmed by a 63% vote for him to remain too.

Ritchie's stock rose steeply during the last third of the season with his leadership, work-rate and consistency seen as a big reason behind the upturn in results on the pitch as Newcastle steered themselves to safety. However, he came close to leaving in the January window and is said to be interested in a move south to be closer to his family.

An overwhelming 96% of fans feel it is time for Yoshinori Muto to be sold. The Japanese forward commands a sizable salary at Newcastle, and had a quiet loan spell at Eibar in La Liga last season, scoring just once in 26 league games as the club finished 12th.

Similarly, Andy Carroll has been deemed surplus to requirements by supporters, with 82% of the the opinion that he should be released after making a modest contribution from the bench in the last two seasons. Even more fans (85%) feel the same fate should fall to Dwight Gayle who managed one goal in just over 500 minutes of league football last season.

In terms of loans, Newcastle fans feel that is the best option for academy graduates Matty Longstaff and Elliot Anderson. With more than half of fans calling for this option on those players. In the case of Longstaff, this prospect looks likely, though quite where that would leave him this time next year remains to be seen as he is out of contract in June 2022.
