Four in five people think face masks should be worn in crowded outdoor spaces – poll

More than 80% of British adults think face masks should be worn in crowded outdoor spaces, a new poll has found.

A survey of 1,000 people by online pharmacy UK Meds also indicated that a third (35%) of people think face masks will still have to be worn in indoor public spaces for the next seven to 12 months.

A further 29% said they expect this rule will be in place beyond next March.

Face coverings are currently compulsory in indoor public settings and public transport, but outdoor spaces are less regulated.

Borough Market in London became the first outdoor space in the UK to enforce mask-wearing in January, with a £50 fine for those breaking the rule.

At the time, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said face masks should be “worn routinely outside of the home, including supermarket queues and other places outside that may be crowded.”

According to this survey, 83% of adults in the UK agree with him.

Managing director of UK Meds, Joe Soiza, said: “It’s good to see the vast majority of people accepting the need for face masks, and supporting a wider use for them.

“It’s important to remember however that they are only effective when worn properly and alongside social distancing and washing your hands regularly."
