Four-hour waits reported in rush for jabs in Renfrewshire

Paisley residents have reported waits of up to four hours as they queue for booster jabs.

Reports suggest some were forced to endure the lengthy delay on Tuesday at the Lagoon Centre jab hub as people flock to receive vaccines in the face of the growing threat from the Omicron variant.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged people to get vaccinated yesterday as she imposed fresh new curbs which cancelled Hogmanay for many.

And reports of waits of hour-long waits at Johnstone Town Hall's vaccine centre were made early on Wednesday.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have confirmed they are aware of lengthy delays at centres and have made a plea to the public to do what they can to help keep queues to a minimum.

They say eager patients turning up too far ahead of schedule to try and beat queues has contributed to the problem as they revealed military personnel have been drafted in to help out vaccination hubs.

Health board bosses say 17,000 people were vaccinated in just one day last week in their catchment area but they fear the rush to get protected before Christmas has sparked a frenzy which places additional pressure on clinics.

They are asking Renfrewshire residents - and those across the board area - to follow five steps to help the process run more smoothly.

Emma Finlay, vaccination lead nurse at NHSGGC, said: "The vaccination teams are so thankful to everyone who have come forward for their vaccination, especially those who have experienced queues. We are trying to get everyone vaccinated as swiftly and safely as possible to ensure that as many people as possible are fully jagged before Christmas.

"I would like to ask members of the public to please be patient with the clinic teams, please consider the five steps and we will look forward to seeing many more of you very soon."

Residents are urged to book an appointment at clinics and only call in at one of a number of drop in centres without an appointment, rather than attending a conventional site without a slot.

Board bosses are also asking those attending clinics not to turn up too more than five minutes before their appointment, saying one of the main causes of long lines at centres is patients turning up well in advance of their jab slot.

They have also appealed for people to check their eligibility for vaccination before they attend - NHSGGC is vaccinating all eligible age groups by appointment in priority order. Drop-ins are currently only available to those aged 40 and over and health and social care workers.

Residents are also being asked to avoid busy periods and consider travelling to a quieter or larger clinic if possible. They say there are thousands of slots available at Hampden Stadium today and tomorrow.

Clinics in other health board areas are also available to book via the national portal.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Vaccination Programme director Anne Harkness (NHSGGC)

Anne Harkness, Vaccination Programme director for NHSGGC, said: "Coming forward to receive the vaccine is one of the biggest things we can all do to protect ourselves and others from the virus, and especially from the Omicron variant. We are delighted that so many people across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are answering the call to roll up their sleeves, and we thank every one of them for supporting the fight against the virus.

"Over the past couple of weeks, we have stepped up our vaccination programme to unprecedented levels, however, like many other Health Boards and Trusts across the UK, our vaccination centres are experiencing queues – and we need your help to tackle the issues. Today we have shared five simples steps to help reduce the queues, and we would encourage everyone to take them to heart. If we all do our bit, we can make this vaccination programme run more smoothly for everybody."

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde runs a mixture of appointment and drop-in clinics.

More details are available at the NHSGGC website and via social media channels. To book your appointment, go to NHS Inform or call the national helpline on 0800 030 8013.

Anyone who has missed an appointment can reschedule by calling the national helpline.
