Four horses die after collision involving two lorries on A9 near Perth

Four horses have died following a collision between two lorries on the A9 at Cairney Brae near Perth.

One of the lorries, which was stationary at the time, was carrying four horses to the Blair Castle International Horse Trials.

Two of the horses died at the scene while two others were later euthanised.

Two men were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee following the incident, which happened at about 2.45pm on Tuesday.

The road was closed until 9.30pm.

A statement on the competition's Facebook page described the incident as "heartbreaking" and sent its sympathies to the horse owners.

The owners of the horses have said their "world has been turned upside down" by the heartbreaking loss.

Three of the horses belonged to Sophie Hulme with the fourth belonging to Nick Gauntlett, who was travelling with the animals to the equestrian event in Blair Atholl.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.45pm on Tuesday, August 24 officers were called to a report of a road crash involving two lorries on the A9 at Cairnie Braes, near Perth.

"Police, Fire and Ambulance attended and two men from one of the lorries were taken by Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

"One of the lorries was carrying four horses. We can confirm that two of the horses died and two had to be euthanised by vets.

"The road was closed until around 9.30pm."
