Four held for smuggling rice in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Civil Supplies CID on Tuesday busted a PDS rice smuggling racket and seized About 24 bags of rice that was about to be smuggled out of Tamil Nadu.

Based on a tip, a team led by the civil supplies CID inspector Mukesh Rao intercepted a vehicle belonging to a leading restaurant chain in Raja Annamalaipuram. When the cops arrived at the place, they found some workers engaged in loading the rice bags in a truck. On spotting the cops, the workers fled the scene.

However, police rounded up all the suspects and arrested them. They were identified as truck owner Vinod, and three others --Nagaraj, Kumar, and Kannan. Police seized two motorcycles and the truck from them apart from confiscating 1,050kg of rice bundled in 24 bags. The police team is investigating the source and destination of the consignment. The four suspects were remanded in judicial custody.
