KANCHANABURI: Four gaurs were found dead in Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in Sangkhla Buri district, supposedly due to a fall from a cliff while crossing Ranti River in this western province.

The carcasses of the four gaurs were found at different locations inside the wildlife sanctuary in tambon Laiwo on Wednesday by wildlife officials.

The first carcass was found near a dam about five kilometres away from the entrance of Kong Mong village. The second and third carcasses were found on islets in Ranti River behind the village. The fourth was found on a sandy beach behind Kong Mong temple.

Wichian Chinnawong, head of Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, and officials inspected the four carcasses. The animals were believed to have died at least 3-4 days before being discovered.

The officials said the gaurs might have fallen from a cliff at the waterfall while trying to cross the river. It had rained heavily over the past 2-3 days, triggering run-off in the area. The animals might have been swept away by strong current during the runoff.

Authorities would survey forest areas, particularly at Pong Nam Ron as they believed more might have died.
