Four further Covid deaths in Bristol today amid drop in new cases

Bristol has seen a significant drop in new Covid cases today (Tuesday, January 11), continuing the trend of the previous three days.

A total of 1,348 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the region over the last 24 hours, which is a drop from 1,958 yesterday and 2,745 on Friday last week.

Four further deaths within 28 days of a positive test were also sadly recorded today, bringing the region's total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 1,663.

Every single area in the Bristol region recorded a drop in new Covid cases today, and that is mirrored at a national level with a decrease in cases of 13.1 per cent over the last seven days.

However, there is mixed news with regards to hospitalisations in the area - the latest figures released by the Department for Health and Social Care show that the number of people in the region's hospitals is at its highest since February, but in good news, the number of covid patients who are seriously ill and needing ventilators is continuing to gradually decrease.

There is also controversy in Bristol after a four-year-old boy was forced to wear a mask when getting a PCR test at a walk-in site, although the law says that children under the age of 11 are not required to wear one in any setting. The UK Health Security Agency has been contacted for further clarity on this.

Today was also the day that the rules around Covid testing in England changed; people who test positive on a lateral flow test no longer have to confirm their result with a PCR test unless they develop symptoms, but must still self-isolate.

The number of positive test results in each area since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 38,571 (+214)

  • City of Bristol: 107,606 (+516)
  • North Somerset: 40,066 (+255)

  • South Gloucestershire: 60,307 (+363)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets.

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 270 (+1)
  • City of Bristol: 612 (+2)
  • North Somerset: 368 (+1)
  • South Gloucestershire: 413 (-)
