Four fire engines called to tackle derelict pub blaze in Wythenshawe

Firefighters were called to Wythenshawe this evening to a derelict pub fire. A portion of Portway was closed from 5pm on Monday (June 20).

Crews were scrambled to the Happy Man pub on Portway, which closed down for good some years ago. It’s thought the pub was on fire for around an hour and a half.

Photos from the scene taken by the Manchester Evening News after emergency workers left the area show a large puddle of water around the building. Numerous windows of the pub have also been smashed.

Portway was closed from Simonsway to Cotefield Road, causing some bus services to be diverted, Transport for Greater Manchester said. Now, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has confirmed that four fire engines were scrambled to the scene

A statement said: “Just after 5pm this evening (Monday June 20), four fire engines from Wythenshawe, Withington and Stockport central fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving a derelict pub on Portway, Manchester.”

“The crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses used two hose reels to extinguish the fire. Firefighters have been in attendance for around one and a half hours and are still at the scene.”

The spokesperson later added that crews left the scene at roughly 7pm this evening.
