Four feet high pile of rubbish with 30 rats in it cleared after two years

This was the extraordinary site that greeted a waste clearance firm when they were called to pick up some rubbish in south Bristol this week.

The communal bin store had been out of action for a while - and for two years people passing by had been throwing their rubbish over the fence into the space.

By the time contractors were called in, the rubbish was piled four feet high inside, completely covering the bins and cycle ranks inside.

The man tasked with the job of clearing it said he found around 30 rats and mice living in the pile.

A huge pile of rubbish containing around 30 rats was cleared by Chris 'Skemer' Winters in Hartcliffe (Skemers Clearance)

The discovery was made at a communal bin store in Hartcliffe, Bristol, and was cleared by Chris Winters, who runs Skemers Clearance, based in Knowle West.

“It had been gathering this rubbish for two years,” he said.

“When I saw it I thought ‘f*** I, there’s going to be some rats in there - at least I’m keeping the streets clean.

“There were about 30 rats and mice in there, it was disgusting."

The job of clearing the rubbish took a few hours, and the space was left near enough spotless - and available to be used again.
