Four Edinburgh areas see Covid cases surge including one new major hotspot

Four Edinburgh neighbourhoods have seen Covid infection rates surge to higher levels in the most recent seven day period.

Public Health Scotland figures for the week leading up to Sunday, May 23 show that Silverknowes and Davidson Mains now have more than 400 cases per 100,000 population. This is the highest category of infection rate set out by Public Health Scotland.

Edinburgh Live reported on Tuesday how Davidson's Mains Primary School had been forced to close until the end of the month after an outbreak among pupils. It is understood as many as 17 teachers and 11 of the schools 19 classes are in self-isolation.

Barnton, Cammo and Cramond South has also seen coronavirus cases rise in recent days, with between 200 and 399 per 100,000 population. Easter Road and Hawkhill Avenue and Gorgie East have seen increases, and both are between 100 and 199 for the latest seven day period.

On the flip-side case numbers in Craigmillar have fallen from between 200 to 399 per 100,000 to between 100 to 199.

  • Easter Road and Hawkhill Avenue
  • Gorgie East
  • Bonnington
  • South Gyle
  • Longstone and Saughton
  • Trinity East and the Dudleys
  • Morningside and Craighouse

Between 50 and 99 cases per 100,000 population

  • Parkhead and Sighthill
  • Dalmeny, Kirkliston and Newbridge
  • Gorgie West
  • Ratho, Ingliston and Gogar
  • Stockbridge
  • Restalrig and Lochend
  • Hillside and Calton Hill
  • Polwarth
  • Broughton South
  • Slateford and Chesser
  • West Pilton

Between 1 and 49 cases per 100,000 population

  • Dalry and Fountainbridge

All other neighbourhoods are deemed to have 'suppressed' the virus with either zero or fewer than two cases.

Across the seven day period there were 227 cases reported in the Scottish capital, with test positivity 1.9 per cent. The infection rate is 43.2 per 100,000 population.

The Scottish Government confirmed on Wednesday that the number of cases across Scotland had risen in the last 24-hours, with 546 new positive tests confirmed. Test positivity is recorded at 2.1 per cent.

No no deaths were reported, although 98 people are currently in hospital. Six of these patients are in intensive care.

So far as the vaccination programme goes a total of 3,155,733 people have had their first jag with 1,913,809 people having had their second dose.
