Four Dublin hospitals report no Covid-19 inpatients for first time in over a year

The end of the pandemic appears to be closer than ever with four Dublin hospitals reporting zero cases of Covid-19.

St James´s Hospital confirmed yesterday that they were entirely Covid free for the first time since March 2020.

Now three more Dublin hospitals have joined St James´s with the positive news.

HSE CEO Paul Reid confirmed on Twitter this morning that the three Dublin children's hospitals, Crumlin, Tallaght and Temple St have no Covid-19 inpatients.

There are also seven other adult hospitals throughout the country with no Covid-19 patients; Naas, Tullamore, Sligo, Galway, Kilkenny, Mercy and Waterford.

At the peak of its fight with the disease, St James´s hospital had around 110 Covid-19 patients.

Speaking to Virgin Media News today, Dr Cliona Ni Cheallaigh, Infectious Disease Control Consultant at the hospital, called it a "fantastic day".

She said: "I think we've all worked so hard to get to this point, both staff in the hospital and the people of Ireland.

"We're hoping that this will continue but I think it's important to realise that there still is a lot of COVID circulating in the community and that people need to not let down their guard.

"But for the moment, things are looking really hopeful, and we're delighted to get back to all the other work that we need to get done."

As of Thursday night there are 59 cases of Covid-19 in Irish hospitals, with 23 of those in ICU.
