Four-day working week pilot sparks debate - have your say on UK's new scheme

A trial for a four-day working week has launched in the UK and we want to know what YOU think about it.

The pilot is part of research by Cambridge University, Oxford University and Boston College, in partnership with think tank Autonomy and 4 Day Week Global.

Employees from six UK companies have been asked to work for a smaller amount of time, for the same pay, in the hope that productivity increases.

Productivity benefits the business that employs them and employees get to spend more valuable time away from work.

"We are excited by the growing momentum and interest in our pilot program and in the four-day week more broadly, " Pilot Programme Manager for 4 Day Week Global, Joe O’Connor, said.

"The four-day week challenges the current model of work and helps companies move away from simply measuring how long people are "at work", to a sharper focus on the output being produced. 2022 will be the year that heralds in this bold new future of work."

However, the pilot's announcement has sparked debate online. Many were in support of the scheme, explaining how working a four-day week would allow them to spend more time with their loved ones.

"This would be great for me having a disabled child would give me much more time with her," one user wrote on Facebook.

Another said: "About time. Research in Iceland found that in many sectors productivity was maintained on a 4 day week and in some even increased.

"Working humans harder beyond a certain point (around the 4 day mark) can make them ill, unhealthy and miserable and produce little productivity benefits if any to the employer."

However - others were not thrilled by the scheme, arguing such an incentive would not work in industries that operate seven days a week.

"My small business makes food stuff, we can only make x-amount per hour. How on earth can a 4 day week help us improve production if it is humanly impossible to do more per hour?" One Facebook user fumed.

Another said: "Fewer hours, same pay, but how will you be more productive? Will a bricklayer lay more bricks in a four day week?. I'm self employed and only usually work four days anyway but I don't earn as much as when I put a five day week in and couldn't."
