Four Day Week Ireland campaign for shorter working time gains support from politicians

Politicians from across the board are supporting a campaign to bring in a four day working week.

A coalition of unions, businesses and activists are pushing for the Government to take a new look at the new way of working.

Four Day Week Ireland believes that the shock to working lives that Covid has caused is the perfect time to explore reducing time in the office.

And a recent survey for the campaign last month suggests that workers, employers and the public are all in favour of the Government at least looking into it.

It found that three out of four members of the public are in favour of the four day week.

A spokesman for the union Fórsa, a member organisation of Four Day Week, told Dublin Live this about the survey findings: “Consistently throughout the survey, the response to a 4-Day week is stronger amongst younger adults and those working full-time.

“Professional and technical grades and those working in manufacturing, office or administration-based roles, or indeed retail or distribution, are the most enthusiastic.

“77% support the Government exploring the introduction of a 4-Day working week with almost half (48%) strongly supporting such an initiative.

“Even amongst employers a substantial majority are enthusiastic and supportive of the Government exploring the introduction of a 4-Day week.”

Politicians who took part in yesterday’s included TDs Louise O’Reilly (SF), Jennifer Whitmore (Soc Dems), Aodhán Ó’Riordáin(Labour) and Bríd Smith (PBP).

And Senators Emer Currie (FG), Malcolm Byrne (FF) Róisín Garvey (Greens).

Four Day Week Ireland is a campaign coalition of trade unions, businesses, environmental organisations, women’s rights and civil society organisations, academics, health practitioners and global advocates.
