Four clubs could offer Aiden McGeady a Sunderland escape route

Three Championship sides - and one League One rival - are reportedly keen to offer Aiden McGeady a route out of Sunderland.

The Republic of Ireland winger has been told he can leave Wearside this month by manager Phil Parkinson, and has not appeared in a matchday squad since the 2-1 home defeat to Burton in November.

With the January transfer window now open, the Black Cats will be keen to move McGeady on - not least to remove him from the wage list if he is not going to feature for the first team.

North East neighbours Middlesbrough have been linked with a loan move for the former Celtic man, while Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City have also been credited with interest.

League One outfit Blackpool have also been linked, with former Sunderland boss Simon Grayson - now in charge at Bloomfield Road - the man who brought McGeady to the club in July 2017.

There is also thought to be interest from abroad, with a move to the MLS a potential next step.

Speaking about McGeady's future just before Christmas, Parkinson said: "There has not been any interest to me directly about Aiden , but I think there are one or two clubs from abroad who have contacted the hierarchy at the club.

"There's nothing concrete at the moment, but in these kind of situations normally the player's agent will be working on several situations and that's why it was important to give Aiden time to try and sort things out."

McGeady has made 21 appearances for the Black Cats so far this season, scoring six goals.
