Four Clare beaches under swimming ban due to increased bacterial levels in water

Clare has been hit with a swimming ban as bathers are being warned to avoid four popular beaches.

The county council is advising bathers not to swim at Lahinch, White Strand Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point and Kilkee beaches due to increased bacterial levels in the water.

It is a result of run-off from the catchment area after heavy rainfall, RTE reports.

A spokesperson said the council had acted on the advice of the HSE.

They said: "Clare County Council, on the advice of the HSE, has placed a temporary prohibition on swimming at Lahinch, White Strand Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point and Kilkee due to increased bacterial levels in the bathing water following heavy rainfall."
