Five children dead and more fighting for their lives after freak bouncy castle accident in Australia

Five children have died and several others are critically injured after a freak bouncy castle accident caused by strong winds.

The tragedy happened during an end-of-year activity at a primary school in Tasmania, Australia on Thursday morning.

Strong winds blew the inflatable equipment into the air which resulted in a number of children falling from a height of around 10 metres.

It was initially reported that two kids from Hillcrest Primary School in Devonport had died, but police later confirmed in two subsequent updates that the death toll had risen to four and then five.

They said that police two boys and two girls from grades five and six, who are usually aged between 10 and 12, were killed in the incident, with a fifth student later dying in hospital.

The incident happened at 10am local time when "a wind event caused a jumping castle to lift into the air", police said.

Emergency services including several helicopters to transport patients attended the scene.

Some officers were seen in tears and embracing while attending the incident, as the Mirror reports.

ABC reporter Monte Bovill called it a "devastating scene", and said on Twitter that "parents have been running to the school to collect their children".

The school was said to be hosting an end-of-year "Big Day In" celebration instead of a school picnic at the time.

Hillcrest Primary School said on Facebook: "There has been an accident onsite at our school. We are closing the school for the rest of the day.

"We ask that parents come to collect their children as a matter of urgency."

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the incident as "shattering and heartbreaking".

He said: "Young children on a fun day out, together with their families and it turns to such horrific tragedy at this time of year.

"It just breaks your heart."
