Four cars 'targeted' in suspected arson attack in the early hours in County Durham

Police investigating a suspected arson attack in County Durham believe it was "targeted".

Four cars were torched in the early hours of Sunday morning in Trimdon Station and a nearby property's windows and doors were also damaged.

CCTV footage captured a male in dark clothing approaching a vehicle and appearing to set it alight.

Fire crews from Peterlee and Wheatley Hill attended and put out the blazes and police launched an investigation.

Now, officers have confirmed they believe that the attacks were targeted.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to reports of vehicles alight on Commercial Street, Trimdon at around 1am on Sunday (June 7).

"Officers attended alongside colleagues from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

"The road was closed for several hours while the vehicles were recovered.

"It is believed the incident was targeted and enquires are ongoing."
