Four cars crash on same stretch of M53 as police issue warning

Police are urging drivers to take care when driving in icy conditions after four cars crashed on the same stretch of the M53.

Black ice has been reported on roads across the region today, with officers urging people to take extra care due to the conditions on the road.

Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit said a number of RTCs have occurred across the motorway network today, (December 30) including one crash at junction three of the M53 on the southbound carriageway.

This was one of four incidents that took place on the same stretch of the motorway within a short space of time, police said.

The Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "A number of RTC’s across the motorway network already today including this one on the M53.

"There were a further 4 RTC’s on this same stretch alone in a short space of time! Please drive to the conditions."

Earlier today the force also warned that "East Lancs, St Helens and Rainford appear particularly treacherous", with black ice reported across the area.

Cheshire Police's Warrington neighbourhood team also advised: "It's really icy outside today so please take care driving and avoid unnecessary travel where possible, we've already had reports of collisions this morning.

"Ensure your vehicle is fully defrosted, removing snow from the roof and giving yourself full visibility."
