Four bodies found on shore near Italy-France border after deadly severe storms

Five bodies have been found in the north of Italy today after violent storms in the region.

Four were discovered washed up on the shore very near to Italy's border with France, their deaths believed to be caused by the severe weather.

It is possible that some of the bodies were swept down the coast from France, reports Reuters.

Officials said on Saturday that two people were confirmed dead and nine people were missing.

Strong rains and fierce winds first hit the border areas linking France and Italy on Friday and the poor weather has continued.

Police confirmed that four people were found dead on the coast between the town of Ventimiglia and Santo Stefano al Mare.

Then the fifth body was found a bit more inland near to a river.

No-one could be immediately identified when they were found.

As well as the tragic deaths, the severe storms caused millions of euros of damage.

Multiple road bridges were swept away in Italy and the streets in some towns were completely covered with debris, overturned cars and mud.

A record 630 mm or 24.8 inches of rain was reported in just 24 hours in the Piedmont region in Sambughetto close to Switzerland, which is more than half of its average rainfall.
