Four arrests after police helicopter chase involving stolen car ends with 'stinger' being deployed

Four men have been arrested following a police helicopter chase through Stockport.

Officers were alerted to a suspected stolen vehicle travelling along Wellington Road in Heaton Chapel last night (Saturday) at around 11.45pm.

The National Police Air Service was scrambled to assist officers from GMP with the pursuit, which continued through Stockport and into south Manchester.

As the vehicle approached Didsbury Road, at the junction of Kingsway, a stinger was deployed by police.

Those inside the car ran away, but four men were quickly detained by officers.

Four men - aged between 17 and 21 - were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

They all remain in custody waiting to be quizzed by detectives.

A grey Hyundai Ioniq that had been reported stolen on Thursday, August 5 from Wythenshawe was also recovered.

Detectives say although four men are in custody, their enquiries are ongoing and they are encouraging anything with information or dash-cam footage to contact police.

Chief Inspector Danny O'Neil of GMP's City of Manchester division, said: "Thanks to the swift deployment of officers and excellent partnership work between teams and NPAS we were able to quickly detain four men and recover a vehicle that had previously been reported stolen to us.

"This is a positive result for GMP and I hope sends a clear message to anyone involved or considering this type of criminality.

"Our main priority is keeping our communities safe and protected and if we suspect you to be involved in such activity we will do our utmost to ensure you are located and face the appropriate justice.

"Although we have multiple people in custody for questioning our investigation will remain ongoing and I would encourage anyone with information, or dash-cam footage, to contact police on 101 quoting incident 3631 of 21/08/21."
