UBON RATCHATHANI: Four men were arrested with 89,000 methamphetamine pills and 44.25 grammes of crystal methamphetamine in a police crackdown on a drug network in the lower Northeast on Saturday, provincial police chief Thanitsak Siripattanapak said at a Sunday press conference.

Pol Maj Gen Thanitsak said the police action followed information that a huge lot of drugs had been smuggled from Laos to Khemmarat district and delivered by Teerapol Wongcharee, 24, and Apiwat Sangthong, 22, both of Amnat Charoen province. The drugs were stored at a resort in tambon Kham Yai in Ubon Ratchathani's Muang district, awaiting distribution.

On Feb 17, two other men -- Chavanakorn Srihanon, 20, and Sirichai Khunsombat, 23 -- arrived at the resort to pick up the shipment. While the drugs were being handed over to them, the police swooped in and arrested the four.

Pol Maj Gen Thanitsak said Mr Teerapol and Mr Apiwat admitted to having been hired by a Lao drug network run by a man named Ngon, of Muang Songkhone in Savannakhet province, to deliver the drugs to the location for later distribution to dealers in Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Roi-et, Kalasin and Khon Kaen provinces.

The four were charged with having drugs in possession with intention to sell.
