Four arrested as stolen car wrecked after being ploughed into lamppost

A stolen car was wrecked in a major crash in Heywood on Sunday (January 29). The white Volkswagen Scirocco was ploughed into a lamppost by the driver before four occupants quickly fled on foot.

Police who attended the scene later traced the four suspects and arrested them on suspicion of burglary. They remain in custody to be questioned.

The vehicle has since been recovered from the scene and will be examined by forensics officers as part of an ongoing investigation into the matter.

Greater Manchester Police's traffic division shared an image of the aftermath of the crash, showing the extent of the damage caused to the stolen vehicle. The front bonnet can be seen completely crushed against a lamppost at the roadside.

The force tweeted on Sunday: "The VW Scirocco was stolen from Bury, it would crash in Heywood and the occupants flee the scene.

"On the arrival of #RPTF units. All four were arrested by the Task Force on suspicion of Burglary and remain in custody whilst enquries are ongoing. Car has been recovered for CSI exam."
