Four arrested after string of crimes reported in Lisburn

Police have arrested four people after stopping a vehicle in the Lisburn area.

Officers from the PSNI's new Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Intercept Team stopped the Škoda Fabia after it was reported to be involved in a number of thefts and attempted thefts on Tuesday (September 29) in the Armagh and Lisburn areas.

In Armagh, two attempted thefts were reported in which items worth approximately £1000 were recovered by shop staff, police said.

In Lisburn, officers recovered items valued in excess of £600 from the stopped vehicle.

Four of the car's occupants were arrested at the scene and are assisting police with their enquiries.

The PSNI's ANPR Intercept Team was launched last year and utilises vehicles equipped with digital technology to automatically detect the vehicle registrations of those committing or suspected of committing crime.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Jonathan Roberts said the unit aims to "identify, intercept and disrupt criminals" by automatically reading registration numbers of passing vehicles, which are then instantly checked against database records of vehicles suspected to be used by offenders.
