Four arrested after pensioners narrowly avoid getting shot with 'lethal' crossbow arrows in Birmingham

Four people have been arrested after an elderly couple narrowly avoided being hit with"lethal" arrows from a crossbow in Birmingham.

Police were called to Gibbons Road, Selly Oak, on Sunday evening after a member of the public reported seeing "bolts" fly across the street.

Armed officers arrived at the scene and found "three steel-tipped arrows" which were later removed, West Midlands Police said.

Three men aged 20, 24 and 49, and a 21-year-old woman, were arrested and a crossbow and further arrows were seized.

All four remain in police custody on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

Selly Oak Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Imran Mirza said: “On initial inspection, the arrows recovered are steel-tipped and lethal. Thankfully no one was hit as it could have ended tragically.

“We had armed police on the scene quickly to contain the premises and make arrests.

“It’s unclear at this stage whether these arrows were deliberately or accidentally fired into the street and our enquiries continue.”

Anyone with information is asked to message West Midlands police using their website's live chat function of via 101 quoting "3229 from 19 July".
