Fountainbridge re-opens seven weeks after fire and explosion which left one dead

Fountainbridge has reopened to traffic seven weeks after an explosion and fire devastated a four-storey tenement building, leaving one man dead.

Earlier this afternoon (Thursday) the road closure was lifted in both directions between Ponton Street and Gardner's Crescent.

Lothian Buses say that services 1, 34, 35, 300 and N34 will resume their regular routes shortly and the diversions have now ended.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the explosion around 5pm on Tuesday, 10 September. Roads in the area were shut off and Tollcross Primary School was closed.

It emerged in the aftermath of the incident that one man had died, and earlier this month he was named as 69-year-old Gordon Sievewright.

His family said they were "deeply shocked and saddened" by his passing while also praising the brave members of the public who risked their own safety to try and rescue him and anyone else from the burning building.

Police said at the start of October their investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and they are trying to establish full circumstances. We'll bring you any further updates on this as we get them.
