Fountainbridge explosion: Tollcross Primary School to remain closed for rest of the week

A primary school which is next to the site of the explosion and fire in Fountainbridge will remain closed for another week.

Tollcross Primary School has been closed on Tuesday and Edinburgh council have confirmed it will stay shut into next week.

The blast hit a tenement building around shortly before 5pm on Tuesday, sending rubble from masonry falling onto the street.

Police confirmed earlier on Wednesday that the incident had been fatal, with a person's body being found in a second-floor property.

Those living in the flats have also told how they will be due to safety concerns following the suspected gas blast.

Edinburgh city council says it will update parents of pupils at Tollcross later in the week. The school is within the exclusion zone set up by emergency services as they asses the safety of the building.

A council spokesman said: "The City of Edinburgh Council has taken the decision to close Tollcross Primary School, Nursery and Community Centre for the rest of the week.

"This follows the significant damage suffered by the building at Fountainbridge next to the school last night (Tuesday 10 September) and the school remains within the safety cordon.

"The safety of the pupils, staff and the public using the school, nursery and community centre is paramount and we apologise for any inconvenience the closures may cause.

"Monday 16 September is a school holiday and parents/carers will be updated about arrangements for next week by 12 noon on Friday 13 September."
