Fountainbridge explosion: body recovered from damaged flat over a week after deadly incident

The body of a person killed on Tuesday 10 September when an explosion - believed to be a gas blast - caused a deadly fire in a Fountainbridge tenement has finally been recovered by the emergency services.

Police and other emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident at around 5pm after reports of an explosion in the four-storey building, which led to debris raining down on nearby streets.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service battled the flames and carried out a detailed search of the building. During this search a person was found dead within the second floor.

However, due to the damaged state of the building, it has emerged that no recovery of the body could take place at the time.

Council contractors have since demolished a considerable portion of the building, according to the BBC, allowing the removal of the deceased person.

Identification of the victim is yet to take place, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is under way, although it is not thought to be suspicious.

Fountainbridge between Ponton Street and Gardner's Crescent has been closed since the incident on 10 September, however Tollcross Primary School reopened to pupils on Tuesday 17 September.
