Police in Mexico are hunting for the killer of Aurelio Cabrera Campos, the founder and editorial director of a weekly news magazine.

He was shot several times last Wednesday (14 September) while driving near Huauchinango, a city in the state of Puebla, and died the following day in hospital.

Cabrera is the eighth journalist murdered in Mexico this year, according to research by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

He founded El Gráfico de la Sierra, based in the city of Xicotepec, about a year ago. He reported on crime and local politics, according to two of his colleagues who spoke to CPJ.

In the latest two editions, his reports concerned several murders in the region. His colleagues said there had been a surge in violent crime during a turf war between organised crime groups.

“Authorities should swiftly establish a motive in the murder of Aurelio Cabrera Campos and bring those responsible to justice,” said Robert Mahoney, CPJ’s deputy executive director.

“Mexican law enforcement and political leaders should show that they are able and willing to end the cycle of impunity that has put the country on track to be the deadliest in the hemisphere for journalists this year.”
