Foster the People have reiterated their conspiracy theories surrounding the suicide of Jeffrey Epstein, after suggesting last week that the billionaire paedophile may not be dead.
In a series of tweets, the band suggested that Epstein had not died as was reported, but in fact may have been replaced by a body double. “Have you seen photos of the body?” the band tweeted. “It’s obviously not him. My guess is Epstein’s on a private plane to somewhere in the Middle East getting prepped for plastic surgery right now.” The band also added the hashtag: “#EpsteinBodyDouble.”
While appearing on Time Crisis, the Beats 1 talk show hosted by Vampire Weekend‘s Ezra Koenig, the band were asked about being “the voice of that particular theory”.
“Look, I’m not a forensics expert,” frontman Mark Foster began. “I put out a f***ing tweet, you know what I mean? I’m just being a musician that wanted to put out a tweet and start a public discourse about this guy. But you look at the photo, and it’s not the same guy!”
After the pair discussed the nature of conspiracy theories, including historic speculation about 9/11 and the assassination of John F Kennedy, Foster said that he hoped his tweets would kickstart a dialogue.
“I guess I would say that I feel like we’re living in an age of misinformation,” he said. “People need to do their own research and dig and not believe everything that you hear.”
