Forward department clicks as Luncarty net five against Whitehill Welfare in first game of the season

Luncarty manager Robbie Holden hailed a convincing season opening triumph on the road at Whitehill Welfare.

The Bleachers ran out comfortable 5-1 First Division winners thanks to doubles from Rhys Davies and Scott Sutherland, as well as a Ben Scarborough finish.

New arrival Davies netted both of his goals from the spot and Holden hopes the competition in the forward department will prove beneficial.

“Rhys hasn’t had a pre-season and was under the weather in the week heading into the game," Holden explained to the PA. "But he got his two goals and he worked very hard for the team.

“With Scott Sutherland getting two as well, they will hopefully push each other on for more goals.”

Holden continued: “It’s a good start and a convincing win against a team that are just down from the Premier League.

“Six players made their debut so there is still some bedding in but we are pleased with the start.”

Goalkeeper Craig Hepburn, signed on loan from St Johnstone, was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet and was only narrowly beaten by a second half penalty.

“Craig was excellent,” Holden said. “He didn’t deserve to concede and got close to the penalty which was in the top corner.

“His organisation and distribution was very impressive. You can see he is a top player and will really help our squad.”

Luncarty now host Glenrothes at Brownlands Park on Wednesday night. Kick-off is 7.30pm.
