'Fortnite': There's A New Excavation/Dig Site At Dusty Divot, But What's Down There?

Fortnite

Okay! It looks like Season 8 is getting moving in Fortnite, if still a little slowly. After weeks of inactivity we’re starting to see the first major “plot” developments with these excavation/dig sites now showing up all over the map. We had one last week by the desert biome, even if we didn’t find much down there save as truck, a skeleton and a volcanic vent. This week there’s a new one in Dusty Divot, right where the meteorite landed oh-so-long ago. If you want to go take a look at it for yourself, here’s where you’re going. It’s not hard to find:

Here’s how these things work: we get a big hole in the ground full of rocks, all of which have gigantic health bars. You can only damage them with your pickaxe, but there’s a major twist: every player in the entire world can damage these rocks at once and affect the same health bar as they do so. So the 50 damage you do per hit is only a very small portion of what why you’re seeing that health bar go down so quickly: it’s the combined effort of every player in the world, at least every player that feels inclined to hop into a hole and whack at rocks for a while.

Last time we had one of these all the rocks were gone by the afternoon, but this time they’ve got a little bit more health. We’ll see what we wind up finding down there: it seems like we’re going to get one of these a week for at least a moment, so there might not be anything all that interesting until Epic kicks it into high gear. The presence of active volcanic vents so far away from the Volcano suggests that there could be a lot of geological activity here on this island, and we might see a lot more lava as things continue.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this “everyone damages the rocks” mechanic would work pretty well for a giant world boss that everyone fought at once. Also, there are dragons already teased for this season. So here’s hoping we fight a giant fire dragon sooner rather than later.
