Fortnite DOWN: Thousands of video game players unable to connect to server

Thousands of Fortnite players are complaining they're unable to access the popular video game, due to an apparent server outage.

Problems started at around 16:16 BST, according to website DownDetector, which monitors online outages.

The issue mainly seems to be affecting players in Northern Europe, according to the site's live outage map.

"We are currently experiencing matchmaking issues across all modes," Fortnite said in a statement on its official Twitter account.

"We are investigating and will keep you updated once the issue is resolved."

Fortnite, which is available in three distinct modes - "Save the World", "Creative" and "Battle Royale" - is thought to have around 250 million players worldwide.

While the first two modes have been successful for Epic Games, Battle Royale, which can be played on mobile devices, is the one that has turned it into a cultural phenomenon.

Thousands of angry gamers have taken to social media to complain about the outage:

Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, has not yet commented on the cause of the outage.
