Fortnite devs buff Cube Rifle after feedback, explain Chapter 7 Season 2’s four-shotgun meta

Fortnite is buffing the Cube Rifle after weeks of player feedback during Chapter 7 season 2, while also explaining why the season’s four-shotgun loot pool has become one of the biggest balancing experiments the game has seen in years.

In a new community update shared on X on May 7, Epic Games explained how player feedback and evolving loadout trends are influencing Fortnite’s current meta, including the decision to buff the Cube Rifle and the studio’s broader approach to future balancing updates.

The developers described the current season’s Battle Royale loot pool as being in a “healthy place” overall, saying both player sentiment and internal gameplay data suggest the current sandbox is working well. According to the team, much of the balancing now happens before weapons are released, with proactive tuning replacing constant mid-season nerfs and buffs.

The Cube Rifle, however, was treated differently. The developer explained that the weapon was intentionally introduced as an experiment to better understand how players interact with unique weapons in the game. After reviewing community feedback and gameplay statistics over the past few weeks, the studio decided the weapon needed improvements.

As part of the latest adjustments, the Cube Rifle now deals more damage, has improved accuracy, faster projectile speed, and increased spread while sprinting or jumping. The developers encouraged players to continue testing the weapon and sharing feedback about how it performs in real matches.

Outside of the Cube Rifle, much of the update focused on Fortnite’s evolving loot pool philosophy. Epic revealed the game has seen more frequent vaults and unvaults this season compared to previous Battle Royale seasons, with milestone-based updates regularly introducing new weapons into the sandbox. According to the developers, those loot pool changes are having a bigger impact on the meta than traditional stat tweaks.

“This season, there are four active Shotguns, which is the most we’ve run in a long while,” the developers said, explaining that each weapon has naturally carved out its own role instead of overlapping.

Epic then broke down the identity of every shotgun currently in rotation. Chaos Reloaders are meant for players confident in landing high-damage opening shots. Iron Pumps reward accuracy and cover usage. Super Shredders are designed for longer-range fights in open spaces, while Dual Hammers excel during aggressive, extended engagements.

The studio also asked players for more detailed feedback on the current meta, specifically asking which shotgun players prefer in either Battle Royale or Zero Build modes, what loadouts they pair with weapons like the Chaos Reloader, and what standout moments or clips best represent the season’s sandbox.

Epic encouraged players to share feedback through community forums, Discord channels, in-game surveys, and gameplay clips, noting that the development team actively monitors how players engage with the current loot pool. The more direct communication has also been welcomed by many players, with parts of the community praising the dev team for returning to the more active feedback-driven approach that helped define the game’s earlier years.
