Forth Wanderers kick-off pre-season action on Saturday

Forth Wanderers get their pre-season programme underway this weekend as they prepare for the West of Scotland League kick-off.

Thomas Devine’s side play against Bellshill Athletic at Carluke’s John Cumming Stadium, in the first game of Newmains United’s Lanarkshire-wide tournament.

There are four more games after that, against Newmains, Lesmahagow, Royal Albert and Carluke Rovers, and Devine has organised friendlies against Albion Rovers under-21s, Whitburn, Lanark United and Harthill.

The gaffer reckons that will put them in a good place, and he’s signed 17 players from last season, with returning goalkeeper Stephen McPhee added to the list.

Devine said: “We’ve got the first game of the Lanarkshire tournament coming up, so it’s quite early doors for getting pre-season games in, but it’s going really well.

“We’ve got 18 signed – 17 from last year and a new goalkeeper.

“There are a good few bodies down training with us as well, so we’ll hopefully have one or two more in for the start of the season.

“We have nine games in total. It’s a different pre-season; we wouldn’t usually have as many games, but with the lay-off and everything we think it’s good value.

“It’s all about getting ready for July 17 and getting the squad down to 20 or 21.”
