Forth Road Bridge could reopen to cars again after Queensferry Crossing faces multiple closures

The Forth Road Bridge could see cars travelling across it again soon, after issues with the Queensferry Crossing.

The bridge shut to cars in 2018 to allow its new neighbour to take over, allowing only buses, cyclists and pedestrians to continue to use it.

However, despite stating that the Queensferry Crossing would rarely need to close due to its windshields, the bridge has actually been shut multiple times since its opening in 2017.

After costing £1.35 billion to construct, the crossing has recently closed due to falling ice that could have proved dangerous to passing vehicles.

This is the third winter in a row that the bridge has experienced this problem, with icicles reported to have hit cars in both 2017 and 2018.

Now, the Daily Record reports that the Forth Bridge may reopen as an emergency diversion to allow drivers to still be able to cross over the water in the event of a closure.

This would mean that motorists would not have to be diverted to Kincardine Bridge, a route that will be in place this weekend as both bridges shut for a training exercise.

The closure will begin at 10pm on Saturday until 8am on Sunday (December 13).
