Formula One takes step closer to Miami as Grand Prix circuit revealed ahead of proposed 2021 race

Formula One has moved a step closer to Miami after organisers agreed a deal in principle to host a race around the city's Hard Rock stadium.

The layout for the new circuit was revealed in a joint statement by F1 chiefs and the stadiums owners the Miami Dolphins , as reported by the Mail .

Should the plans go ahead, the Miami track will be inaugurated from the 2021 season.

Dolphins vice chairman and CEO Tom Garfinkel and F1 commercial boss Sean Bratches said: "We are thrilled to announce that Formula One and Hard Rock stadium have reached an agreement in principle to host the first ever Formula One Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium.

"With an estimated annual impact of more than $400 million and 35,000 room nights, the Formula One Miami Grand Prix will be an economic juggernaut for South Florida each and every year.

"We are deeply grateful to our fans, elected officials and the local tourism industry for their patience and support throughout this process.

"We look forward to bringing the greatest racing spectacle on the planet for the first time to one of the world's most iconic and glamorous regions."

Miami has never hosted an F1 Grand Prix before, and these latest plans are a switch from the previously mooted site in the downtown area of the city, which was met with objections from local residents.

Car parks and land around the stadium will be used to host the race, providing the event is given the green light by the Miami-Dade County Commission, although residents remain concerned about the F1 being held at the new site.

The race would take place in around May time at the start of the racing calendar, either side of the Monaco Grand Prix.

It would become the second America-based circuit along with Texas's Circuit of Americas which takes place in November.

Garfinkel added: "F1 has never been to S. Florida. Imagine people coming to this region from around the World in May.

"Multiple passing zones and world-class clubs and amenities. Barcelona, Monaco... Miami... make it happen."
