Formula One pays tribute to F2 driver Anthione Hubert ahead of Belgian Grand Prix

A minute’s silence has been held prior to the start of Sunday’s Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in memory of French F2 driver Anthoine Hubert, who was killed in a crash at the track yesterday.

The 22-year-old died after a 170mph collision with American driver Juan-Manuel Correa during Saturday’s race, which was quickly abandoned. Correa survived the crash, and is currently in a stable condition in intensive care at a hospital in Liege.

Drivers, including Ferrari’s pole sitter Charles Leclerc, who raced against Hubert as a junior, and Britain’s world champion Lewis Hamilton, joined fans and officials, as well as Hubert’s mother and brother, in paying their respects.

The lead car also carried a French flag during the driver’s parade in tribute. A similar minute’s silence was also held prior to this morning’s F3 race.

Formula One’s main Twitter account wrote: “Today we race. We do so with the heaviest of hearts, and we carry the memory of Anthoine throughout.

“Just like it was for Anthoine, racing is our passion and our dream. It defines us. So today we race for Anthoine. And today, and always, we honour him."
