Former Wimbledon defender Vinnie Jones backs Roy Keane for the Newcastle job

Former Wimbledon defender Vinnie Jones thinks ex-Sunderland manager Roy Keane could be a good option to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle.

The Magpies confirmed this afternoon that Benitez will leave his role as Newcastle boss when his contract expires on Sunday.

It ends a successful three year spell on Tyneside which saw Benitez win the Championship title and re-establish Newcastle as a Premier League side.

He also managed to re-engage a disenchanted fanbase, many of whom have now sworn they are finished with the club as long as Mike Ashley remains owner.

Despite the frustration, though, life continues to march on and Newcastle have confirmed their search for a new manager is now under way.

Garry Monk, Mikel Arteta and Jose Mourinho are among the names leading the betting, while Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce is also reportedly under consideration.

French managers Laurent Blanc and Bruno Genesio are also options, but former Wimbledon hardman Jones believes Keane could be a viable option.

The former Manchester United captain left his role as assistant manager of Nottingham Forest on Sunday as he pursues a return to management.

And replying to Newcastle's tweet confirming Benitez's departure, Jones tweeted: ''Coincidence Roy Keane leaves Notts Forest same time? Could do worse.''

It is purely conjecture at this stage, but appointing Keane would cause a lot of controversy given his past at rivals Sunderland.

Keane managed the Black Cats for three years between 2006 and 2009, winning the Championship title and helping establish them as a Premier League outfit.
