Former Whitley Bay police station could be turned into 24 apartments

Plans have been put together to turn a former police station into apartments.

The building, on Laburnum Avenue in Whitley Bay, was used as a base for the town’s policing team for many years.

It had open plan cellular accommodation, including the old custody suite and cells. There was also a kitchen and WC facilities.

But the property was sold after the police team moved to a new home at the nearby Park View shopping centre around four years ago. The building has remained empty ever since.

Now Taylored Property N26 Ltd has developed proposals to transform it into 24 apartments.

A planning application has been submitted to North Tyneside Council, asking for permission to convert the property into homes.

It says the site currently has six car parking spaces. If the scheme is given the go-ahead, seven more spaces would be added, taking the total to 13.

Coun John O’Shea, who represents the Whitley Bay ward, said: "The old police station building has been vacant for a while now and it has become a bit of an eyesore. Residents will be getting sick of seeing the boarded-up building.

"So it is good to see some plans to bring it back into use and I hope it will help to regenerate the area."

A decision on the proposal is expected to be made by the council in the autumn.
