Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb praises Robert Mueller as an 'American Hero'

Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb shot down his former boss's assertion that Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in U.S. elections is a witch hunt. He also praised the special counsel for his "backbone of steel." That said, Cobb thinks President Donald Trump will escape prosecution.

"I think Bob Mueller's an American hero," the Harvard-educated attorney told ABC News. "I think the world of Bob Mueller. He is a very deliberate guy. And he's _ but he's also a class act. And a very justice-oriented person."

From July 2017 to May 2018, Cobb worked for the Trump administration, where he was plugged into the early stages of the special counsel's investigation as it pertained to the president. Trump has repeatedly called the investigation a witch hunt _ even referring to is as "the single greatest witch hunt in American political history" in a 2017 tweet.

"I don't feel the investigation is a witch hunt," Cobb said. "I wish it had happened on a quicker timetable. But it didn't. And that's unfortunate. But at the same time, it's not a real criticism of the special counsel that on the timing because there were a lot of surprises."

Cobb thinks that, in one form or another, investigations will continue through the 2020 election.

"If the president is re-elected, it'll go beyond that," Cobb predicted. Based on what he's seen, he doesn't expect the president to be linked to Russia's efforts to influence U.S. democracy.

"But at the same time, what do I know?" he said.
