Former Whickham and District Social Club could be demolished to make way for new apartments

Plans to flatten a derelict social club to make way for flats is set to be given the go-ahead by the council next week.

John Moody wants to raze the Whickham and District Social Club to the ground and build a 'L' shape apartment block in its place.

Council planners have recommended approval for this following a consultation period, saying that the building has been empty for three years and has become rundown.

The report said: "The Social Club closed in 2016 and has since fallen into disrepair."

It also said the scheme would bring wheel chair accessible housing and construction jobs to the area.

It added: "It is considered that the development would bring about a number of benefits such as the provision of additional wheelchair accessible housing in Gateshead and the housing growth required in the Local Plan.

The development would also have economic benefits from construction jobs."

Gateshead Council's planning committee will decide on the application at its meeting on Wednesday.
