WASHINGTON _ Former congressional staffer Imran Awan pleaded guilty Tuesday to making a false statement on a bank loan application.
Awan, who worked for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., as an IT consultant, struck a plea deal with prosecutors in a federal court appearance in D.C., CNN reported. He was arrested in July 2017 as he tried to board a flight for Pakistan, and was a subject of President Donald Trump's tweets last month.
He will be sentenced in August and charges against his wife, Hina Alvi, will be dropped as part of his deal with the Justice Department, Politico reported.
The bank application was for a home equity loan. Prosecutors did not find Awan stole or removed data from the House Democratic caucus server.
"The Government has uncovered no evidence that your client violated federal law with respect to the House computer system," the plea deal reads, according to CNN.
Trump tweeted "where is server?" in response to the case in June.
